There are countless stories of people who have decided to “get out of the rat race” or to “do their own thing” after voluntarily or involuntarily leaving a place of employment. The excitement is palpable at first, the whole potential of not having to work for some else’s dreams or goals or vision… and you can finally strike out and do what you most love to do. But there’s the thing that many of these individuals failed to realize… no one cares about your business more than you. So, by the very fact that you have printed up some business cards from an online site that you got really cheap, gotten a web site that your nephew’s cousin in high school or junior college threw up for you on a weekend you should be ready to go. The phone should start ringing and the e-mails should start pouring in. By the sheer fact that you have informed the world your offering even exists that should be enough. But whoops… you forgotten that truism once again… no one cares about your business more than you. So nothing much happens. That yearning to increase growth and outreach doesn’t seem to really go [...]

A friend of mine was talking about being in Church one Sunday and listening to her minister go on about how everyone needs to find the time to be quiet for at least an hour a day. She rolled her eyes and said, “Well, it’s simple to see that he obviously has no kids. I’m lucky if I can find 10 minutes in a day, much less an hour between everything that needs to be done for them in addition to my job.” I heard a sense of resignation that she wouldn’t be able to be in balance as long as she couldn’t find the time to sit and get quiet. I asked my friend about what was true while she was doing all those things and she became very quiet for a moment and then said “I love my children. I love my job. Most of the time, even in the midst of the most hectic day when I really consider what’s true for me- I have a real sense of knowing I am right where I most want to be, that I’m right where I belong.” People Tend to Misunderstand the Type of Balance They Actually Want When [...]

“It’s the question that drives us.” –Trinity In my post “the ‘Real” Matrix, Part 1”, I pointed out how language is the Matrix we all live in and that we are very easily fooled into thinking that words we use to represent something will somehow be the same as direct experience. Here I am talking about another layer to the Matrix, one that again is so obvious it is invisible to most of us most of the time. That is the consideration (or lack thereof) of the intentional generation of context. It can be easy to forget that without context, nothing has any meaning at all and that without the awareness of the context we are generating for ourselves, we are at the whim of whatever context we are operating in as though it is the only possible reality. A Question is the most powerful way I know of generating and setting context. A question sets the point of reference we consider any other information we are presented with. It has a way of deleting whole swaths of information in an instant and bringing new ones in. Those who operate within the Matrix of language with the utmost skill and [...]

When we do anything in the world whether in our business or personal lives, there can be a tendency to think of it as purely an action… but this is wholly inaccurate. Being is absolutely inexorable from doing. A great way of illustrating this is a question my mentor Dr. Joseph Riggio asked me last October- “which side of a quarter is more the quarter- George Washington or the Eagle?” My brain kind of melted for a moment and I answered, “Neither, of course- you can’t have a quarter without all of it.” The reality is that there is no possibility of doing anything without asking “who we are being in order to produce the outcomes we’re producing?” This also means that, if looking at it from the other point of view… “in light if the results I am producing, what has to be true about who I’m being?” Unfortunately from what I see, there are far too many people who have no idea how to answer that question, so they go around doing things that don’t get them the results they know they want and can have, and have no idea why. They compound this by living in a [...]

“Let me tell you why you’re here. You’re here because you know something. What you know you can’t explain. But you feel it. You’ve felt it your entire life. That there’s something wrong with the world. You don’t know what it is, but it’s there. Like a splinter in your mind, driving you mad.” –Morpheus I have a long time friend named Linda who is very animated and expressive. A mutual friend proclaimed one day that “Linda is a verb”. Amusing as that statement was (and still is, frankly), I have over the years, realized how true it is… not just about her but about everyone and everything. My mentor and friend, Dr. Joseph Riggio, points out that the movie, “The Matrix” is a an idea that goes much further than being simply a story told in a movie. In fact there is a “real” Matrix we all live in, which is just as much an illusion as the one portrayed on screen. The Matrix is language. It is all around us, and we are so immersed in it that we have come to believe it is somehow “real”. A good example of this is what I call the illusion [...]
